Testing A 87a Relay Wiring Diagram

Numbers of a relay.
Testing a 87a relay wiring diagram. 87 and 87a are the two contacts to which 30 will connect. To wire a 4 pin relay. When the relay is at rest 87a is connected to 30 and when the relay is energised 87 becomes connected to 30 but never both at the same time. Should have little resistance if the relay works and you ll hear a beep.
Test resistance on pin 30 and pin 87 when connecting pin 86 to 12v and 85 to ground. Here we look at relay switch pin diagram and the different kinds of relay switches. And the contacts pins 30 87 and 87a. I cover 3 4 and 5 pin relays and all you need is a 12v source a multimeter and a test light.
Automotive test lights are available at auto parts stores and hardware stores. With the relay in the configuration that has the 2 load pins connected place the test voltage on 1 of the load pins of the relay and an automotive test light on the other load pin of the relay. You will probably be able to find a quick disconnect plug near where the wires exit the outboard engine cover that you can disconnect. Multimeter used in video.
When negative ground is supplied to one end of the coil and positive voltage is supplied at the other end the coil creates a magnetic field which activated the relay. One should be green and the other blue. The automotive test light should light. Looking at the diagram we see the pinout of a typical 12v relay.
Note that each pin is numbered. How to test a relay that does not have pin numbers or a diagram. Two circuits terminals 87 and 87a have a common terminal 30. Relays take a relatively small amount of power to operate the relay coil but the relay itself can be used to control motors heaters lamps or ac circuits which themselves can draw a lot more electrical power.
Here is a video on how you can test a relay with or without a diagram. To test the motor itself bypassing the relays and relay wiring find the two heavy gauge wires that lead to the trim tilt pump motor. Ti understand its operation consider the relay as having two sections the coil pins 85 and 86. If the coil is not activated 30 will always be connected to 87a.
85 and 86 are the coil pins while 30 87 and 87a are the contact pins.
